Dwight Cartier 

Dwight Cartier’s bass playing connects several generations of Columbus music. He began recording in 1970 as a studio musician for the Capsoul label, contributing bass lines that would later be sampled and heard by listeners around the world. After years performing gospel music, encouragement from longtime friend A. C. Collins helped bring him back to the blues.

Cartier recorded and performed with Teeny Tucker, John Henry and the Rainmakers, Harold Stewart, Li’l Red & the Rooster, Rick Salazar’s Back in Blue, and Deuce ’n a Quarter, including sessions in Louisiana with Kenny Neal. He represented the region at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and served in jam host bands that welcomed featured musicians and developing players alike. Beyond the stage, Cartier’s years as a teacher, coach, and Columbus recreation professional made him a mentor to countless young people. His steady musicianship and lifelong service embody the supportive spirit at the heart of Central Ohio blues.
