Richard P. (Rick) Boals

Inducted 2019

Richard P. (Rick) Boals

Richard P. “Rick” Boals was a cornerstone of modern Columbus blues. A compelling guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader, he inspired countless musicians through his performances and through the legendary Monday-night blues jam at the Dolphin Lounge.

The jam became a classroom, proving ground, and community gathering place. Young players could learn beside experienced professionals, bands could take shape, and audiences could hear the blues renew itself from week to week. Boals led by example—with a commanding musical voice, deep knowledge of the tradition, and an openness that encouraged others to participate. Many of Central Ohio’s best-known blues artists trace an important part of their development to his stage. His legacy lives on not only in the music he made, but in the community he helped create.
